Remote Junior Software Engineer - Pacific Grove, California

As part of the payroll team for a large, nationwide staffing agency, I was tasked with making timecard processing more efficient. I created a program in Python that sped up timecard processing from 5-15 minutes per client to less than 30 seconds per client and reduced errors during that processing from upwards of a dozen per week, to near-zero.

After demonstrating the success of this program, I was tasked with rewriting it to conform to the tech stack of the development team. This meant learning C#, and retooling the program for that language. I learned quickly, and made the C# program more extensive, covering more edge cases and more clients. This program now processing thousands of hours of payroll each week.

Once my C# program took off, I was tasked with assisting the dev team, and bringing more tools to the web. This meant learning how to code in ReactJS. I did so, and quickly built my first Web App: a program for our accounts receivables to see all outstanding invoices, and select and email them out to clients via a custom emailer that pushed a message to our main staffing software that communication had been sent.

After the Invoicing tool was built, I went on to create a simple report for our payroll specialist to check that employees with a job assigned to them were getting hours each week. This report could be exported or emailed.

Perhaps my biggest challenge was an app to reconcile our invoices with the payments we received. As a large staffing agency, we receive payments from numerous sources, all with their own accounting strategies, and many of whom do not reference the invoice numbers when paying off balances. Previously, we would use a combination of spreadsheets to allocate funds, which took a great deal of time and was prone to error. I solved this with a dashboard that automated several different views for our Controller, breaking down total funds unaccounted for, total funds reconciled, and total funds yet to be reconciled by customer and age. I added another page to reconcile the funds where a user can enter invoice and payment information manually, through an editor, or by uploading data from the customer. This all feeds back into our database so every invoice is tracked and can be researched separately if there are any issues. There is a separate notes page as well for tracking important information about customers, and a tool for creating a finalized file to upload to our bank.

My current projects include a time clock app that I am writing in Flutter. This will be loaded onto iPads at customer workplaces for the employees to clock in and out, and will push that data to our database to simplify time keeping and allow for greater control/flexibility for our varied clientele. I am also working to bring my original timecard processing application to the web, where our tools all seem to be moving.

During all of this, I have assisted the data team with the back end by writing the SQL they need to build views that drive the API endpoints I need, as well as writing and editing some of those API endpoints. I also continue to maintain my C# application.
